Coaching Philosophy
About Michael Bruhn-Rasmussen
I’m Michael Bruhn-Rasmussen—a triathlete, exercise physiology geek, and evidence-driven coach. After a 12-year break from sport, I returned to triathlon with a simple goal: test what’s possible with smart training and uncompromising consistency. In just 20 months of self-coached training, I finished my first Ironman in 9:04. I’m now in my second season building toward a bold goal: sub-8:30 Ironman in August 2026.
My path wasn’t linear. I came back without a coach, relying on scientific principles, careful data analysis, and brutal honesty about what works—and what doesn’t. That self-coaching journey shaped how I train and how I coach: precise, adaptable, and relentlessly practical.
Performance Highlights
Ironman debut: 9:04 (self-coached)
Rapid return to elite-level endurance after 12 years away from structured sport
Current project: sub-8:30 Ironman by August 2026, with transparent, data-led progress
Coaching Philosophy: Evidence First, Athlete-Centered Always My coaching is built on physiology, not fads:
Individualization over templates: Your plan fits your physiology, goals, schedule, and recovery capacity.
Intelligent load management: We optimize training stress (intensity distribution, volume, frequency) to drive the right adaptations at the right time.
Durability and consistency: We build a body that can absorb work—progress comes from months of consistent, sustainable training, not hero weeks.
Data-informed, not data-blind: We use heart rate, power, pace, HRV, and RPE to guide decisions, but we also listen to how you feel. Data supports; it doesn’t dictate.
Simple nutrition for complex demands: Carb-appropriate fueling and hydration strategies tailored to your training demands and gut tolerance—not guesswork.
Technical efficiency: We refine swim mechanics, bike positioning, and run economy to turn fitness into speed.
Mindset and process: Goals set direction; systems create results. We prioritize daily execution and recovery habits over perfection.
What I Believe
Nothing is impossible. Your ceiling is far higher than you think when training is specific, progressive, and repeatable.
Coaching should be accessible. High-quality, science-based support shouldn’t be the first thing cut from your budget.
Education empowers athletes. I explain the why behind each decision so you learn to self-regulate and thrive long term.
How I Train Athletes
Clear season architecture: Macro cycles built around your A/B races, life constraints, and recovery rhythms.
Smart intensity distribution: Polarized or pyramidal models when appropriate, with quality threshold and race-specific work introduced methodically.
Progressive overload with guardrails: We progress volume and intensity only when you’ve demonstrated readiness—objective and subjective.
Strategic testing: Regular field tests (e.g., 5–20 min power/pace assessments, critical swim speed, lactate proxy sessions) to recalibrate zones and plans.
Race execution rehearsed: Pacing, fueling, and mental skills are trained like any other discipline—no surprises on race day.
Nutrition Approach
Train fueled, race fueled: Carbohydrate periodization aligned to session goals; we protect key quality sessions.
Gut training: We build tolerance to your target race-day intake and hydration needs in training to reduce GI risk.
Practicality first: Plans you can and will follow, integrated with your daily life.
Who I Coach
Ambitious age-groupers who want structure that respects real life
Self-coached athletes who want expert eyes and a sharper plan
Athletes returning from breaks or plateau, aiming to redefine their limits
Performance-focused athletes targeting 70.3 and Ironman PRs
Why Work With Me I’ve lived the process: rebuilding from zero to a 9:04 Ironman self-coached—and now pushing to sub-8:30. I combine scientific rigor with empathy for the realities of work, family, and recovery. You’ll get a plan built for you, constant iteration based on your feedback and data, and coaching that makes high performance feel attainable.
Let’s build something remarkable—one focused week at a time.
